Gifted and Talented Program

If you suspect that your child may be gifted in one of the identifcation areas Superior Cognitive, Specific Academic Area, Creative Thinking and Visual/Performing Arts please contact your building principal for more information on testing and identification.  

Superior Cognitive

Definition:
Superior cognitive ability refers to students with intellectually gifted abilities.  It is not reflective of specific academic areas or arts.  It is overall exceptional intelligence.  

Characteristics:

  • Advanced vocabulary
  • Rapid learning and easy recall of factual information
  • Seeks complex and challenging activities
  • Tendency to become bored with routine tasks, high level of curiosity
  • Concern for ethical issues, strong sense of fairness
  • Persistent goal-directed behavior
  • Persistent goal-directed drive
  • Ability to use logical reasoning

Services:
Students in grades 3–5 receive services within the general classroom environment.  Secondary students receive services through classroom placement.  

Specific Academic Ability

Definition:
Specific academic ability refers to students who have demonstrated exceptional strength in a specific area beyond the norm for their age group.  

Characteristics:

  • Long attention spans in areas of interest 
  • Is able to extend learning in key areas
  • Shows a broad perspective on one or more subjects
  • Seeks assistance in extending knowledge in areas of interest
  • Passion for learning in area of ability
  • Similar characteristics to intellectual ability but concentrated around one or a few areas 

Services:
Students in grades 3–5 receive services within the general classroom environment.  Secondary students receive services through classroom placement.  

Creative Thinking

Definition:
Students who are independent thinkers exhibit original thinking in various situations.  These students are often creative and expressive, can determine several solutions when problem-solving and thrive in challenging tasks.

Characteristics:

  • Fluent in producing and elaborating on ideas
  • Makes unusual associations between remote ideas
  • Flexible in thinking patterns
  • Can show intense concentration 
  • Intellectually playful, interested in fantasy and imagination
  • Can show unusual degrees of originality 
  • Doesn't mind being different

*Students can be nominated by a teacher or parent to be screened for possible identification in creative thinking

Visual & Performing Arts

Definition:
Students who originate, perform, produce or respond at exceptionally high levels in either dance, drama, voice or in drawing or painting.  

Characteristics:

  • Fluent in producing and elaborating on ideas
  • Makes unusual associations between remote ideas
  • Flexible in thinking patterns
  • Can show intense concentration 
  • Intellectually playful, interested in fantasy and imagination
  • Can show unusual degrees of originality 
  • Doesn't mind being different

Students are nominated by teachers for assessment in the area of Visual and Performing Arts.  Students are then assessed at the annual Summit Area Gifted Educators Assessment Day each spring.
