From Our District Nurse - EV-D68 Respiratory Virus

The media has been covering a pediatric respiratory infectious called EV-D68.  According to Dr. John Bower, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Akron Children's, there are more than 100 types of enterovirus.  "The EV-D68 infections occur less commonly that those of other enteroviruses and most often appear as a cold-like illness.  The problem has been that it can - in a small number of patients - also cause more severe respiratory illness, especially in children who are 5 and younger and those who have asthma.  To help reduce the risk of infection, Dr Bower recommends: washing your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands, Avoid kissing, hugging and sharing cups or utensils with people who are sick. Disinfect touched surfaces. Children with asthma, be sure they take their medication and follow their asthma treatment plan. Keep a child feeling sick home from school, call your healthcare provider if symptoms worsen.  Click here for the entire letter from our District Nurse, Alene Rayl, BSN, RN
