Some students in third, fourth and fifth grade classes at Brimfield and grade 5 at Suffield have had the opportunity to participate in the Wordmasters Challenge this past year; either as a whole class or small group.   To do well, students have to not only understand the meanings of the words, but also be able to reason carefully about the relationships shown in the analogy pairs given.

 

Here are some of the kinds of relationships which analogies may express: antonyms, synonyms, part:whole, whole:part, tool: its action, tool user: tool, tool:object it is used with, category:example, cause:effect, increasing intensity, decreasing intensity, action:thing acted upon, action: subject performing action, object or place: its user, noun: closely related adjective.
