Students in Grade 1 learn math facts with a goal of fluency in addition facts (up to 20) along with subtraction facts. Students will explore shapes, charts and graphs as well. Math homework is assigned nearly every night (with the exception of Fridays and test or math center days). All homework assignments reflect the day's lesson. Students will practice skills in class prior to receiving homework assignments. As with all homework, your child is expected to complete the assignment in conversation with parents. While we want children to work as independently as possible, parents may need to read directions or encourage their children to revise their work. One of the reasons homework is implemented is to help children develop strong work habits. Parents can help children succeed in math by ensuring that homework is completed, build math fact fluency with flashcards, counting coins, sorting objects, measuring in baking or cooking, and telling time on an analog clock.
