The 40 Book Challenge

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are starting our 40 Book Challenge today! I am challenging your fourth grader to read 40 books by the end of the school year. I know they can do it!

The goal of the 40 Book Challenge for intermediate readers is to get students to leave their reading comfort zone and explore new reading genres. I would love to see my students’ love of reading flourish, as well as for students to make significant academic gains in reading comprehension. The best way to become a better reader is to read voraciously and the 40 Book Challenge helps with this!

I know 40 books sound like a lot, but students will only have to average about 1 book a school week. This can be accomplished by reading during our daily independent reading time at school and by spending at least 20 minutes reading nightly at home. They can always use holidays to move ahead or get caught up. Students will have the opportunity to visit the school library where the librarian and myself will assist the students in choosing appropriately leveled books and genres to complete the 40 Book Challenge. My classroom library is also filled with a variety of choices that students can check out as well.

Some books, like shorter non-fiction books, can possibly be read in a day or two. Most books will obviously take longer to finish. By making the right book choices, I am confident all students will be able to achieve the goal of reading 40 “just right” books for the intermediate school level.

All students are expected to participate; however, grades are not given for the 40 Book Challenge. If you have any questions, please email me at

Happy Reading!
