Narcotic Overdose Prevention Education (NOPE) Task Force Presentation at Ravenna High School
Ravenna High School to Host Narcotic Overdose Prevention Education (NOPE) Task Force

In hopes of spreading their message of drug abuse prevention to students and their families in Portage County, the Akron area chapter of the Narcotic Overdose Prevention Education (NOPE) Task Force will speak at Ravenna High School on November 30th from 9-10 am and Brown Middle School from 1-2 pm.

NOPE Task Force effectively tells the story of overdose from a number of perspectives.Their presentation utilizes family members, police officers, and actual 911 tapes of overdose calls. At times graphic in content, it is designed to evoke an emotional response from students. The scripts have been approved by licensed psychologists, certified prevention professionals, law enforcement officials, The Safe and Drug Free School Board Advisory Council, and family members who have lost children to drug and alcohol related incidents.

The mission of NOPE is to reach communities through prevention, education, and support. Founded in Florida in 2004, they also have chapters in Pennsylvania and now in Ohio. The Akron area NOPE chapter was formed by the principal at Stow-Munroe Falls High School, Dr. Jeffrey Hartmann. The Akron chapter completed their first presentation this year on September 12th at Cloverleaf High School in Lodi and have since spoken to students at Kent Roosevelt and Green high schools.
The Ravenna High School Service Learning class will be acting as hosts for this event. Service Learning is a Leadership and Community Engagement course offered to junior and senior students.

An evening presentation for parents will be held on November 30th at 6:30pm in the Ravenna High School Auditorium. Parents from any school in the area are welcome to attend.

Field Concert Choir and A Christmas Carol
The Field Concert Choir will be performing before the show on December 9, 2017 at the 1:30 show.  We are able to get tickets for 50% off at just $32.50.  These are not in the upper tier, but on the floor of the theater.  
Purchased tickets will be placed at Will Call at the theater.  If you would like to purchase tickets, please email jessica.havalo@fieldlocalschools.org with the number of tickets and a name for will call.  See the flyer for more details
 
Congratulations Devon Carpenter! image Congratulations Devon Carpenter!
At its statewide conference, the Ohio Educational Library Media Association (OELMA), Ohio's professional association for K-12 school librarians, announced the recipients of the READ On, Ohio! Award for Children and Teens. The award celebrates avid readers nominated by school librarians in the following categories; primary (K-2); intermediate (3-5); middle (6-8); and high (9-12). This year marks the second year READ On, Ohio! was awarded to six very deserving students from across the state. OELMA is pleased to announce that Devon Carpenter, an 8th grade student at Field Middle School, is the recipient of this award. In her nomination letter, school librarian Kris Baker, says that "Devon Carpenter encompasses the role of library aide to the highest level. She has recruited other 8th graders to fill the needed slots for our library aide schedule. Not only does she take care of tasks like book circulation, but she loves to give book recommendations to her peers. She promotes her love of fantasy books but has also been known to suggest other genres to her classmates. I can count on Devon to come up with creative book displays for the library shelves and showcases. Her love of reading went to a new level last year. During our middle school holiday band concert, Devon wore the Clifford costume that had been shipped with our book fair. Parents, siblings and visitors came to the book fair and purchased books because of Devon's willingness to advertise for us. Devon is never seen without a school library book in her hand. Recently she told me the story of her family camping trip. She decided to take her tablet on the trip. After exhausting all of her downloaded OverDrive books, she convinced her mother to use the Wi-Fi hotspot just long enough to allow her to download the next she needed. Even the lack of Wi-Fi would not keep Devon from reading." CONGRATULATIONS to Devon and to Field Middle School for cultivating a passion for reading in its students.

Completed applications may be returned to the Superintendent's Office located at door #5 at Field High School.   Click on this application link to print your copy. Copies are also available at all school offices throughout the district.
