Writing in 1-2

Writing in First Grade

One of our goals in first grade is to become competent writers who enjoy expressing ourselves in many different ways. The beauty of writing down our ideas is that we can go back, make changes, correct spelling, add new ideas, or take out ideas that don't fit. Writing is a creative process and we are so excited to continue our writing journey in first grade. By the end of the school year, my hope is that every child in 1-2 thinks of themself as an author and illustrator.

When will my child write in class?

We write during reading, writing, math, science and social studies. We work on writing across all curricular areas together, independently and with our friends. Writing is an important part of our days in 1-2!

What types of writing will my child do this year?

Some of our writing activities include writing daily messages, writing descriptive sentences, responding in writing to books we've read, creating webs and lists, writing summaries and friendly letters and writing about our content learning. We also have Writer's Workshop each Friday. During Writer's Workshop, we will have mini lessons and then write on specific topics. At other times, your child will write in their Writing Journals on any topic that they choose. We also have a Writing Center that your child will visit each week with many fun activities.

What writing skills will my child develop this year?

During our writing activities this year, your child will be working on correct use of capitalization and punctuation, selecting and developing topics, writing complete sentences, writing for a purpose and an audience, using details when illustrating, concepts of print, spelling, sound blending, use of commas and quotation marks and much more!

Will my child write both fiction and non-fiction pieces?

Yes! We will write fiction as well as informational pieces! When we write informational text we will learn about captions, labels and other features of non-fiction writing.

Are there specific goals for writing in first grade?

Yes. Our first grade teaching team developed grading period goals for all first graders based upon our Ohio Academic Content Standards in Writing. These goals would be the minimum requirement for students. Keep in mind that all children reach their goals at different rates. We look at our goals annually.

By the end of the 1st grading period: The student will write one complete sentence.
By the end of the 2nd grading period: The student will write complete sentences using correct capitalization, punctuation and spacing on a given topic.
By the end of the 3rd grading period: The student will write a descriptive paragraph of at least three sentences using correct capitalization, punctuation and spacing on a given topic.
By the end of the 4th grading period: The student will write a simple story with a clear beginning, middle and end using correct conventions and descriptive phrasing.
