Here are more examples of the “Then and Now” technique.

If you’re interested in trying the two face illusion as one of your techniques, watch Blue Lightning TV's tutorial on how to accomplish the two-face illusion.

Bell Work:

Take note of what you need to do. Here are some suggestions:

  • Finish incomplete assignments.

Accordion Photo Card To Do
Posted 4/30/2018 at 9:35:59 AM by Alicia Antol [staff member]

TIP:

The more precise you are, the easier it is to create the actual card! :)

  1. Choose pictures.

    1. wider than tall

    2. not similar

  2. View ruler and gridlines.

  3. Resize both to be 3x5.

    1. try resizing image

    2. if that doesn't work, resize canvas - may need to crop

  4. Create a new 3x10 file.

  5. Move the pictures over, alternating one and then the other.

Monday 4-30-18
Posted 4/27/2018 at 1:48:50 PM by Alicia Antol [staff member]

Bell Work:

Check out the Accordion Photo Card handout.

Today we will...

Discuss how to create the Photoshop file needed for this assignment and discuss the type of pictures that work best. I have materials for you to use if you would like to make one - perhaps as a gift?

If you are not finished with past assignments, it may be wise to do those first!

If you do not have the files you would like to use today, you should practice with sample photos so that when you get the images you want, you'll know exactly how to do it!

Goals:

  • Use class time effectively to increase your knowledge and skills related to digital photography!

  • Merge photos in a way that would create an accordion photo card.

Friday 3-2-18

Bell Work:

Review the requirements for the Warhol Project.

Today we will...

Go over how to get started on the project. Watch the short demo on the projector.

Then, get to work! If you don't have a picture, you're welcome to take one in class today!

Here are some tips for the project:

  • Using the grid and "snap to grid" features may be helpful when resizing your images (see the handout for details)!

  • If your Threshold layer looks good in some places, but too dark in others, use the Dodge Tool on your image layer to "soften" the Threshold there.

  • Try making selections on the image layer AND on the Threshold layer - it may work better on one than the other, depending on the image.

    • TIP: When making selections on the image layer, it is helpful to hide your Threshold layer!

  • If you want to move your selection to another quadrant, make sure you're on a selection tool and use the arrows on your keyboard!

  • Colorization should be on its own layer - not the image or Threshold layer.

  • Create separate colorization layers whenever you are adding color in the same area.

    • You may have one layer for "hair color" for all 4 images. However, you may not want "hair color" on the same layer as "shirt color" if your shirt and hair touch in the image.

  • All image layers should be below the Threshold layer. All colors should be above it.

  • The border layer should be on top of everything else as it "finishes" the project.

Goal:

Create a Warhol-style image using various features and tools in Photoshop.

Thursday 3-1-18
Posted 2/28/2018 at 11:23:31 AM by Alicia Antol [staff member]

Bell Work:

Check out Andy Warhol's Bio. Scroll past the video and read it. You're also welcome to watch the video with headphones. :)

Today we will...

Go through the Warhol Project rubric.

Look at some examples in Google Classroom and in the Standout Student page. What do you like/dislike about them?

Consider how you will get your image to your X-drive. Take the steps to get it here so you can start working on it in Photoshop as soon as possible!

If you get your picture(s) today, you are welcome to get started, but I'll explain a lot more about how to do so next class!

Goals:

  • Understand what is expected of you for the Warhol Project.

  • Consider how you will get your image on your school computer to begin the Warhol Project as soon as you can.

Wednesday 2-28-18
Posted 2/26/2018 at 11:16:19 AM by Alicia Antol [staff member]

Bell Work:

Continue colorizing a black and white photo of your choice.

Today we will...

Watch one more video about colorization: How to Colorize a Black and White Photo in Photoshop by Photoshop Video Academy. This is a more advanced technique and you are more than welcome to use it while working on this assignment and future projects! I would recommend playing and pausing it as you go back and forth between the video and Photoshop to try the techniques.

Return to your Colorization Assignment. If you don't like something about it, try another technique! Even if you turned something in already, you can always unsubmit the assignment and then turn it in again with your improved file.

Goal:

Colorize a black and white image using various editing features and tools in Photoshop.

Bell Work:

Get a file from Google Classroom for the "Biking Demo." (Remember: You will need to open it in a new window to see the download button!)

Today we will...

Go through the “Biking Demo.” As we do, follow along on your computer as I complete the steps using the projector.

Watch a video called, "How to use the sponge tool in Photoshop" by tutvid. A different version of Photoshop is used in this video, but we have most of the same options at the bottom of our interface, rather than the top.

Goal:

Further explore tools and menus, use and organize panels, select colors, and use brushes.

Today we will...

Finish up the YOYO #1 Project. We will be moving on tomorrow, so use the most of your time today!

Maintain "Go-On" points. If you're in need of an idea, see me!

Bell Work:

Review the requirements of the YOYO#1 Project. See the rubric in Google Classroom or get a paper copy out of the tray.

Today we will...

Continue to work on the YOYO #1 Project. If you finish the requirements, check out the extra ideas at the bottom of the page. You will not be graded on including these, but they may add to your project!

When finished, catch up on past assignments and/or work on a "Go-On" Activity. Keep in mind that you have a choice on what to do, but you MUST be doing SOMETHING related to Digital Photo (or at least school) to keep your 25 points!

Goals:

  • Merge photos, use the gradient tool, apply text, apply effects, and use drawing tools.

  • Maintain "Go-On" Points. :)

I hope you enjoyed your snow day yesterday! Today's plan is very similar to what was posted for yesterday, but there is an additional infographic to check out!

Bell Work:

Look over the infographic: Can I Use This Picture?

TIP: Click to enlarge and pan around using the scroll bars.

Then, look over this one: I took a photo of my friend that I want to share… now what?

Today we will...

Discuss the infographics from bell work.

Go over and get started on YOYO Project #1.

Goals:

  • Differentiate between images that can and cannot be used and for what purposes.

  • Combine images, manipulate content, add text, apply special effects, and use a drawing tool.

Bell Work:

Get a Climber Demo paper out of the tray and open two files in Photoshop: climber and cliff.

Today we will...

Continue with the demo. It's best to stay with the class and help each other as needed.

Toward the end of class, you will explore filters and styles by selecting half an image and applying different things to it. By selecting only half you can see the "before and after" of the application. After applying one, choose "Undo" to start fresh OR see what happens when you apply more than one at a time.

Goals:

  • Combine images, manipulate content, add text, and apply special effects.

  • Explore filters and styles in Photoshop.

Bell Work:

Try to get two files from Google Classroom for today's demo. They are Photoshop files (not just images) so you will have to open them in a new window and then download them. They will likely go right into your "Downloads" folder when you do.

You may cut/paste them into you X-drive from there or at least make sure you're saving your work-in-progress to your X-drive.

Don't worry if you're having trouble. I'll show everyone how to do this on the projector in a minute! :)

Today we will...

Start the Climber Demo. Follow along on your computer while I complete it using the projector. We will not finish it today, so again, you should save what you have as a PHOTOSHOP file in your X-drive.

Toward the end of class, you should "fake a sunset" using the gradient tool and a picture of your choice.

Goals:

  • Combine images, manipulate content, add text, and apply special effects.

  • Fake a sunset using Photoshop.

Continue working on your Reflection Image.

Today we will...

Finish The Reflection Image Assignment. It is due by the end of class today, but don’t let this stress you out. Remember what due dates mean in this class! See the rubric for details on what to include and turn it into Google Classroom when finished.

When you're finished, make sure all your previous assignments are complete and turned in. Then, choose a "Go-On" Activity - either from the page on our class website or come up with an idea on your own. Just make sure you're doing something productive related to digital photography (or at least school) to maintain your points! :)

Goal:

Create a unique reflection image in Photoshop using the Image, Layer, and Filter menus in addition to various Tools and Tool Options.

Bell Work:

Save the "Red Ferrari" files from Google Classroom to your X-drive.

Today we will...

Go over the questions associated with the BLT - Layers Demo.

  • If you haven't turned yours in yet, you may type your responses as we discuss them. If you've already answered the questions, you may make corrections if necessary.

Complete the Red Ferrari Demo.

Create a similar image using pictures of your choice for the "Reflection Image" Assignment.

  • You may use your own pictures or pictures you find online. Either way, you will need to save them to your X-drive. Keep originals because you will turn them in along with your completed file.

Goals:

  • Review selection tools and layers.

  • Experiment with a filter, a flip, and the eraser tool.

Bell Work:

Tell your neighbor what you know about file types. You  probably (hopefully) know that we save as a Photoshop file while still working on projects and as a JPEG when finished, but do you know WHY?

Today we will...

Discuss the handout: File Types Explained.

Watch a video about managing layers.

Return to the BLT Layers Demo. If you’re not finished with it, continue "making it your own" by adding other elements to it.

Turn the BLT Layers Demo into Google Classroom. When you do this, you will need to answer some questions for full credit.

Make sure all assignments so far are complete and turned in:

  • YOUR Photo Composition

  • Selections Practice - FoodFace

  • Resolution Review

  • Layers Demo - BLT

If you have extra class time, choose a "Go-On" Activity.

Goals:

  • Successfully work with layers in Photoshop.

  • Explain why layers are important in photo editing.

Begin our demo on layers in Photoshop to create a BLT sandwich.

Discuss the handout: File Types Explained.

Goals:

  • Gain a better understanding of why layers are so important in photo editing.

  • Continue to practice using selection tools.

  • Understand that different file types are used for different purposes.

Bell Work:

YOUR Photo Composition is due today. Do you need to borrow a camera? Do you have any questions?

Finish your second food face and turn it in if you haven’t already.

When you’re finished with the above, read over the article about resolution on Exposure Guide.

Today we will...

Take a few notes on resolution.

Use notes to take an open-note "quiz" in Google Classroom.

Check out this article from GCF learnfree.org for some more detailed info on things like image dimensions and file types.

Goals:

  • Explain how resolution works.

  • Begin to understand more about file types.

Bell Work:

Open the "food face" file we were working with yesterday and make sure it has the following:

  • Two (or more) eyes.

  • At least 5 different food items.

  • Excess space cropped out.

Today we will...

Go over how to turn files into Google Classroom.

Attempt to create a new face out of the files that were added in Google Classroom (or search for your own images).

Consider the new challenges with these different photos.

Goals:

  • Save and upload a completed project.

  • Continue to practice working with selections in Photoshop.

Bell Work:

Consider the assignment: YOUR Photo Composition. How is it going? Do you have questions? Do you need to borrow a camera during class?

Today we will...

Do a "food face" demo on selection and move tools in Photoshop. We will:

  • Get a file from Google Classroom to start.

  • Save it as a Photoshop file as we're working on it.

  • Save it as a JPEG to turn it in.

Goal:

Explore selection and move tools in Photoshop, creating a face out of food.

Bell Work:

Look over the Google Classroom assignment: YOUR Photo Composition. It shouldn't take long at all, but it is DUE on Friday!

Today we will...

Explore the article that is linked below... You will see the difference between selection tools and can click each link for more info. Check out the picture of "Tool Options" for each selection tool...

Photoshop Elements Help/Using Tools to Make Selections

Watch a short video on basic selections. Pull up a chair! You will likely want to be closer to the screen to see the details about selections!

Open a sample picture in Photoshop. You will need to click “Accept” and possibly “Use Anyway” when opening Photoshop for the first time. Help each other out if needed and explore what was covered in the link and video.

If you have issues accessing Photoshop, do a “Go-On” Activity instead. Click the link on the left of our class website for ideas. I recommend watching tutorials on Blue Lightning TV. Headphones are up front if you need to borrow some. I'll be back tomorrow to answer any questions you have! :)

Goal:

Explore selection and move tools in Photoshop.

Finish going over classroom procedures.

Join our Digital Photo Google Classroom. Here is our class code: klx9ul

Find a picture you think is visually interesting. It can be anything as long as it's school appropriate!

Go over photo composition techniques. You will find a few examples, post them in Google Classroom and I'll project them. As I do, the class will try to guess which techniques were used.

Goals:

  • Further understand how our classroom runs.

  • Join our Google Classroom.

  • Identify various photo composition techniques.
