Use the newspaper Week 13 American Revolution map of Ohio rivers to complete newspaper Week 18 Canals and Railroads.  Week 18 is due tomorrow and will count for more points than usual because there is a paragraph response.  Please be looking over newspapers at night.  The PARCC computer test is in a month.  Students will need to type responses in the computer.  Any practice typing at home will greatly help.

Tuesday, 1/27/15
Well... Our new website deleted over a month of entries, but the good news is that we can start tomorrow with daily entries.  Thanks for your patience as all of us learn to use this new program.  :)

Today, Students took the "How was the Grand Canyon Formed?" Science quiz. They used the notes from the week.

Then, students worked on the Social Studies Unit 2 quiz. This is taking awhile because students are looking up all answers and writing down the page numbers for each question. To break up the quiz, we also watched a 20 minute video about the creation of Lake Erie 5,000 years ago up to the canals that were built to improve transportation. This is the introduction to the next SS unit dealing with the American Revolution.
We have A LOT to cover before the state testing in March. Please be studying.

Thursday, 11/13/14

Classes 1 and 3 began the SS Unit Quiz (about 10-20 minutes). They will finish it tomorrow so they have time to study tonight. Class 2 went to the Book Fair for about 30 minutes during Social Studies class so they will compelte the entire test tomorrow during class.

I finally understand the statement that you can lead a horse to water, but not make it drink. I am doing all I can to help your child and many of you are doing all you can from home. Thank you for your help :)

The SS Unit 1 Quiz was a easy as I could possibly make it. I gave students notes for all of the actual questions on the quiz. We highlighted or starred the notes that covered the quiz questions so that students would know exactly what to read. I read the quiz aloud and discussed the possiblities for the essay question twice throughout the week before the quiz. We also answered all questions in class so that I knew students were studying the correct answers. The quiz was open book and open notes meaning that they should have looked up every answer in the book or in the notes. They had the entire 80 minutes to work on the quiz and were allowed more time if they needed it.

Yesterday, I collected a study guide for the Unit 2 Quiz. It should have taken about ten minutes to complete. About a third of the fourth graders did not do the study guide, despite knowing that the quiz is Thursday.

I feel that I am doing all I can without actually taking the quizzes for the kids. I hope they are studying at home.

Thursday is the SS Unit 2 quiz. Students will have everything they need to study marked by the end of class today. The SS quiz will be open book and open notes again.

There is also a Science quiz Friday. It covers the handout - How was the Grand Canyon formed ? - .

Monday, November 10, 2014

I collected the SS study guides today. In class, we listened to U2 Lesson 5 and did the comprehension questions at the end of the lesson. We also did the Sciene Day 1 handout How was the Grand Canyon formed? We did the end of Unit Review in class today during class.

SS UNIT TEST THURSDAY

Wednesday, November 5, 2014

Students were told on Monday that the Unit 2 Quiz will be next Thursday. Social Studies is a tested subject area this year and we have A LOT of material to cover before the first round of testing in a few months. Expect nightly homework of looking over the book and notes. Students have completed all information for lessons 1-3 as of today.

The last Social Studies quiz was open book and open notes. I read the test aloud to the kids twice before they actually took the test. We also but a * or highlighted the important information that would be on the test. Despite all my efforts, some students did not use their resources during the test and did not do well.

The next quiz will be next Thursday and it will be open book, open notes.

Monday, October 27, 2014

Today we continued to work on the Social Studies Unit 1. The Unit Quiz will be Thursday and it will be open notes. Students will receive the last of the study pages and the study guide tomorrow.

In writing, students have been working on a descriptive paragraph of his/her favorite place during class.

Science Water Cycle Quiz next Wednesday. Students will need to write a paragraph explaining the water cycle in the correct order: evaporation, dispersion, condensation, precipitaion, accumulation, and (again) evaporation. I will begin each sentence for the students: First, ... Finally. There will be a word bank, but the words will be in alphabetical order, not the correct order. In Social Studies, we are working to read maps correctly. Any help at home is much appreciated :) Have a great weekend.

Writing

Students have been working in the writing packet. The current skill is identifying the topic sentence and details. Today, students created an outline of their favorite book. The summary will be exactly five sentences and will be completed by the end of writing class tomorrow. Those that do not finish will finish during recess tomorrow. We are having problems with students not working independently and therefore holding up the learning of the rest of the class. I hate to put time limits on things, but I am asking the kids to rewrite five sentences (that have already created) in 25 minutes.

Wednesday, September 03, 2014

Writing 1. Complete the web 2. Write a great “hook” sentence to introduce my paragraph.3. Pg 1 of the packet is due tomorrow.

Students should work on the introductory sentence for our 7-10 sentence paragraph about a place they have been. This was discussed at length in class with Ms. Viall giving examples of how she came up with a sentence to describe what the Niagara Falls are in case anyone has never been to or seen the falls. This homework should take 5-10 minutes and may require a little research to come up with great words to "hook" or grab the readers attention and make others want to read the paragraph.

MS. VIALL'S EXAMPLE INTRODUCTORY SENTENCE(S):

This summer, I visited Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. Niagra Falls is a world wonder where the Niagara River falls in a horseshoe shape and millions of people visit the falls each year.

Friday, August 29, 2014 Thank you students. It has been a wonderful start to the school year
