*has only one vowel
*the vowel is "closed in" at the end by one or more consonants

Closed Syllable Exceptions

There are 5 closed syllables make the long vowel sound. We learn these as glued sounds.

-old -ild -ost* -ind* -olt

* these two sounds can sometimes make the short vowel sound. We learn to check what would make sense in the sentence when we encounter words with these endings.
