3rd Grade

3rd Grade
The music students in 3rd grade are focused on two main areas. The first is Listening to a piece of instrumental music in order to hear the mood or picture the music inspires, then identifying the music elements that help the composer accomplish that. The second is identifying music signs and note names on the treble clef, which will help us prepare for playing recorders in 4th grade. Following are some of the concepts that help us reach these goals:
  • Identifying and defining music signs.
  • Singing a wide variety of increasingly difficult songs and improving in matching pitch and using good technique.
  • Adding harmony to our singing by using ostinatos and rounds.
  • Hearing the background story of and singing "The Star-Spangled Banner".
  • Classifying instruments by the four Instrument Families, and identifying them by sound.
  • Listening to instrumental music of various styles and genres, and identifying the elements of music that they hear.
  • Assessing how much they like/dislike a piece of music and defending their answer.
  • Playing an autoharp (a simple string instrument) with good technique to accompany a song.
  • Performing four-beat rhythm patterns accurately by clapping and using instruments.
  • Differentiating between a beat and a rhythm patterns.
  • Naming the notes on the lines and spaces of a treble clef staff.
  • Playing melody bells, using treble clef notes on the staff.
